What is Ultra Edge Technology and how to use it in a Cricket Tournament?

Ultra Edge Technology

Because of the Asia Cup, many people are talking about cricket these days. So, in the final match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, a catch by a Pakistani batsman, Iftikhar Ahmed, was saved by the wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis, and the referee did not give the decision as an out at that time.

However, Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka did not refer this to the third umpire, and from the footage shown during the broadcast of the match, it appeared that it hit Iftikhar's bat. For this, a technology called Ultra Edge is used and after this incident, many people were interested in finding out what this Ultra Edge technology is. So today I brought the answers to that.

Ultra Edge technology is a system used in cricket to judge whether the ball has hit the bat or not after the ball has been bowled. Stumps microphones behind the batsman and cameras installed around the stadium monitor the ball and the sound it emits.

The stump microphone is able to distinguish between the sounds emitted by the bat, the pad, and the body based on frequency levels. As soon as the ball approaches the bat, cameras are placed on either side of the batsman, and cameras placed at opposite ends of the field track the ball for a visual representation. Then the sound microphone picks up the sound based on the movement and sends it to the oscilloscope. This oscilloscope shows the sound frequency levels of the waves. The combination of the camera and the stump helps the umpires to decide whether the ball hit the bat.

There are several reasons for these Ultra Sound malfunctions. The most common reason is to see a spike in the wavelength of the sound before the ball hits the bat. This could be due to a possible error in the stump mic or other noises picked up by the microphone during the delivery of the ball. It is also possible that the sound detected by the microphone will change if the bat hits the ground at the same time as the ball hits the bat. The sounds detected by the ball hitting the body after passing the bat close to the body also cause the sound to change.

Well, I hope you will get a good understanding of what ultra edge is and how it works from this article. See you again in a similar article. Have a nice day!
